SNHS CHAPTER NEWSLETTER

Issue: May 2025

Hello SNHS Advisors,

As another successful school year comes to a close, we want to thank you for your incredible dedication, enthusiasm, and all the fantastic contributions you've made to science education and community outreach. Your passion for science truly makes a difference!

In this final newsletter of the school year, we spotlight and celebrate the achievements of the following SNHS chapters:

  • Lowell Catholic High School brought DNA Day to life with a school-wide nucleotide craft activity and a life-sized DNA model, engaging students across all grades.

  • American Nicaraguan School hosted an astronomical event in collaboration with the Asociación Nicaragüense de Astrónomos Aficionados “Carl Sagan,” sparking interest in the wonders of the sky.

  • Leesburg High School continued their legacy of community service with impactful clean-up initiatives, demonstrating leadership and commitment to environmental stewardship.

We highlight SNHS board member, Dr. Sivaram Arepalli's, recent visit to two California chapters. His presentations provided invaluable insights, inspiring our members to pursue their scientific endeavors with renewed enthusiasm.

As you head into summer break, we encourage you to reflect on all you’ve accomplished and recharge for another exciting year ahead. Remember to submit your annual reports.

Thank you for being an integral part of the SNHS community. We wish you all a restful, joyful, and inspiring summer break. You've earned it!

Sincerely,

The SNHS Board of Directors

DNA Day at Lowell Catholic High School

by Hannah Espinola, SNHS Vice President, Grade 12

Here at Lowell Catholic, we love celebrating DNA day. Since DNA Day 2025 fell during our spring break, we've decided to celebrate a little early this year! Our SNHS chapter met and decided that we not only wanted to host a school-wide nucleotide craft activity, but also create a life-sized DNA molecule!

In years past, we’ve celebrated DNA Day with a craft activity, and this year, a few of our members were eager to bring that tradition back. We wanted this year’s nucleotide craft activity to involve everyone at our school — not just the high schoolers.

A Year-In-Review: SNHS at American Nicaraguan School

by Marlon Cruz, 10th grade, Elected Treasurer 2025-2026

As we wrap up the 2024-2025 school year, our SNHS chapter is proudly concluding a productive period of time.

The year started with the induction of 12 new members, all of whom joined the existing members to attend a welcoming astronomical event in November 2024. To make this possible, we invited the representatives of the “Asociación Nicaragüense de Astrónomos Aficionados ‘Carl Sagan’ - ANASA”. The event started in the evening, with a very interesting and interactive presentation called “Observing the Sky From Earth”, where members had the opportunity to engage in the conversations, by both asking and answering questions.

by Barath Balaji, President, Grade 12, 3rd Year in SNHS

For the 2024–2025 academic year, Leesburg High School’s Science National Honor Society (SNHS) was led by a strong officer team: President Barath Balaji, Vice President Kayla Nord, Secretary Ana Montealegre, Media Relations Angela Serna, Treasurer Vu Phan, and our dedicated sponsor, Ms. Durham. With 51 active members, we prioritized effective delegation, clear communication, and meaningful service, all aligning with SNHS’s pillars of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Our leadership team hosted monthly full body meetings to keep members informed, along with monthly officer meetings to evaluate progress, plan events, and share feedback. We maintained consistent communication through Instagram (@leesburg.snhs), the Remind App, and Google Classroom to post meeting slides, upcoming projects, and member shoutouts.

We'd love to feature your school chapter in the SNHS newsletter!

Making Connections: SNHS in the Classroom

SNHS board member Dr. Sivaram Arepalli visited chapters in California, delivering an insightful presentation and engaging with future leaders in science.

SNHS members of Leigh High School in San Jose CA pose with SNHS board member Dr. Sivaram Arepalli.

On May 13, 2025, we had the wonderful opportunity to host a visit from Sivaram Arepalli, a member of the National Science Honor Society (SNHS) Board. During his visit, he delivered an inspiring and motivational speech about the vital role science plays in our everyday lives. He also highlighted how the resources and opportunities offered by SNHS can support students' educational and career goals.

In addition, he shared valuable insights on how SNHS chapters can further expand their impact, offering ideas and encouragement for future club initiatives.

We also planned and discussed the upcoming Science Sunday event, outlining the activities and assigning responsibilities to ensure its success. In addition, we reviewed important end-of-year dates, including information regarding graduation regalia,

This event was both informative and energizing, and we are grateful for the chance to connect directly with national leadership and gain a broader perspective on the opportunities SNHS offers.

A total of 25 students and 3 faculty members attended Dr. Arepalli's presentation on Lasers for Materials Science, at Anderson Clark Magnet High School. Dr. Arepalli is a founding board member of SNHS. He is a laser physicist with experience in thermal protection materials for aerospace and nanomaterials (like CNTs) for weight reduction, as well as electrical conduction. His current focus is on nanomaterial applications for Energy Storage, such as batteries and supercapacitors.
