SNHS CHAPTER NEWSLETTER

Issue: October 2024

Welcome to a new school year! I hope it is full of exciting discoveries and plenty of fun along the way.

I am excited to announce the launch of our new SNHS Chapter Newsletter—a great way to stay informed on upcoming events, opportunities, and inspiring stories from SNHS chapters from around the world. In this issue, courtesy of the Smithsonian Magazine, we learn about how studying the insects and other animals around us can inspire practical ideas for engineering, medicine and drug discovery.

Fittingly, in this issue we hear from one of our chapters at a high school in Puerto Rico, whose members are experiencing a closeness with nature and learning firsthand about ecosystems and biodiversity. We hope their story inspires you to look around, ask questions, and think about creative unexpected possibilities.

We are eager to hear your stories, too. If you would like to be featured in the newsletter or on the SNHS blog, please complete this form.

We wish each of you a great start to the new school year!

Warm regards,
Nelson Totah, PhD
Chairman of the Board of Directors
Science National Honor Society

COOL FACTS FOR CURIOUS MINDS

BUTTERFLY WING PATTERNS

A study showed that the white spots on monarch butterfly wings help them fly better by creating small air currents that give them extra lift. This discovery might help engineers design more efficient drones.

CHAPTER SPOTLIGHT

Colegio Maristas Guaynabo in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico

Science As a Vehicle for Personal Development

by Jennifer Adorno, SNHS Chapter Advisor

On the Caribbean Island of Puerto Rico, the Colegio Maristas Guaynabo is part of the Science National Honor Society. This chapter, consisting of approximately 25 active members, promotes knowledge and enthusiasm for science through various community activities. Among the active members are President Inés López and Treasurer Alejandro Tiragallo, who are prominent leaders in coordinating activities during the school year. The Society’s passion for science is evident in its commitment to sharing its love for this discipline with the public.

One of the chapter's main initiatives is participating in the Science Festival, organized by the American Chemical Society (ACS) at the Paseo de la Princesa in San Juan. This event brings together multiple scientific institutions to offer an enriching educational experience to hundreds of visitors. Through interactive experiments and hands-on activities tailored to different levels of understanding, attendees can explore scientific concepts in an entertaining and accessible manner.
